Officer Saves Choking Infant With Rapid Lifesaving Response
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — A Sterling Heights police officer is being credited with saving the life of a 1-year-old child after responding to a medical emergency Wednesday evening, authorities said.
Police and fire crews were dispatched Dec. 17 to a home near 18 Mile Road for a report of a child who was not breathing. Evidence Technician Officer Virgadamo, the closest officer in the area, arrived within one minute of the 911 call.
The child’s mother met the officer outside holding her unresponsive son, Roman. Recognizing the child appeared to be choking and not breathing, Officer Virgadamo immediately began lifesaving measures. Moments later, the child began breathing again and started crying.
Sterling Heights Fire Department personnel arrived shortly after and provided advanced medical care. Roman was transported to a hospital for further evaluation and is expected to recover.
Sergeant Jespersen and Officer Emily Elgert remained on scene to support the family during the incident.
Police Chief Andy Satterfield praised the officer’s actions, saying the rapid response and calm decision-making were critical in saving the child’s life.
