VERNON, Conn. — Firefighters and emergency crews rescued a 40-year-old man stuck in a tube slide at Northeast Elementary School on East Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The Town of Vernon Fire Department, Vernon EMS, and Vernon Police Department were dispatched just after 4:30 p.m. Responders found the man wedged head- and feet-first in the middle of the playground slide. With temperatures rising, EMS personnel provided oxygen and set up ventilation to keep the patient cool while firefighters worked to extricate him.

Rescue 141 deployed tools to cut into the structure, while Tower 541 used its aerial ladder to stabilize the slide. Within 30 minutes, firefighters freed the man. He was evaluated on scene but refused further treatment or transport to the hospital.

Officials called it an unusual rescue but praised the professionalism of all crews involved in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.
