Custom officials seize smuggled goods worth $43,590 from airport in southern India

Air Customs officials seized gold worth Rs. 31.87 lakhs (USD 43,590) from southern India's Chennai International Airport on January 3.

The suspects were intercepted at the terminal of the airport.

Visuals witnessing the smuggled items feature two pouches full of gold paste concealed inside it. In addition to that, two molten chunks of metals can also be seen resting on the counter amid other illicit assets.

A 28-year-old identified as Thameem Ansari Samsudeen of Chennai and a 49-year-old named Jahabar Ali Abdul Wahab of Thanjavur, who arrived from Dubai by Air India Flight IX 1644, were intercepted at the exit. On further examination, two pouches of gold paste weighing 733 grams (1.616 lbs) were found concealed ingeniously inside their underwear. On extraction, it yielded 621 grams (1.369 lbs) of gold of 24K purity worth Rs. 31.87 lakhs (USD 43,590).

A total of 621 grams (1.369 lbs) of gold paste worth Rs. 31.87 lakhs (USD 43,590) were retrieved and seized by Chennai Air Customs in the two cases. Furthermore, an investigation into the matter is underway.
