Thick smoke and the pungent scent of sulfur billowed from a volcano in Russia, raising alarm among locals and tourists.

Footage captured by the Kamchatka Scientific Institution shows gas and fumes seeping from cracks in the Ebeko volcano on Paramushir Island on April 15.

Plumes of smoke can be seen rising from multiple fissures on the mountain, with a yellowish hue marking the vent openings.

The Ebeko volcano is one of the most active in the region. Between 1793 and 1991, it erupted eleven times—mostly minor events with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 1. Its largest recorded eruption, in 1859, reached a VEI of 3.

Eruptions from Ebeko are typically phreatic and explosive, caused by steam pressure and underground water interacting with magma.

Health experts warn that inhaling volcanic smoke and sulfur can irritate the lungs, trigger asthma, and lead to serious respiratory issues especially with prolonged exposure.
