CHESTERFIELD, Mich. — A 15-month-old child is safe after a stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a crash on July 17, thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies.

Port Huron Police Department first reported the vehicle stolen from a gas station around 9 a.m., with the child inside. A neighboring agency attempted to stop the vehicle, and shortly afterward, a St. Clair County Sheriff's deputy located it on westbound I-94 south of County Line Road.

The suspect, who fled law enforcement at high speeds, exited briefly onto 23 Mile Road before reentering the freeway. The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crashed into Sugarbush Tavern in Chesterfield. The suspect, a juvenile with a lengthy criminal history, was taken into custody and has not been publicly identified.

Authorities confirmed that the child was unharmed. Sheriff Mat King praised the swift action, stating, “When a child is involved, situations are certainly more heightened and we are all grateful the child was unharmed in this instance.”
