EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two people remain in critical condition after a high-speed crash involving a car and a trash truck early Friday morning, police said.

The East Providence Police Department responded around 5:28 a.m. Aug. 8 to the intersection of Mink Road and Wampanoag Trail, where a Nissan Altima slammed into the back of a stopped Mega Disposal trash truck. Footage of the crash was captured on the truck’s rear-facing camera.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Ziondre Ogiba of Providence, and a 20-year-old female passenger were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. Both are still listed in critical condition. The occupants of the trash truck sustained minor injuries.

Ogiba faces charges of reckless driving and multiple citations. Police said the investigation by the EPPD Traffic Unit is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed. Officials emphasized they will continue strict enforcement of speeding and distracted driving violations to protect motorists.
