SEATTLE — A stolen vehicle went airborne Wednesday after its driver jumped the University Bridge while fleeing police, officials said.

The incident began around 12:20 p.m. Sept. 17 when officers attempted to stop a car with stolen plates near 10th Avenue East and East Boston Street. The driver sped through residential streets before police lost sight of the vehicle.

Shortly after, officers found the car stopped in traffic near the University Bridge as it was lowering. When officers moved in, the driver swerved into oncoming traffic, broke through a safety gate and accelerated onto the partially raised bridge, jumping the gap.

The vehicle landed on the opposite side and continued northbound before being abandoned near Pasadena Place East. Police said the car was severely damaged, and the investigation remains ongoing.
